TOOLS YOU’LL NEED
Cocktail Shaker
We recommend using a stainless steel shaker because you can easily feel when it gets cold enough. If you don’t have one, a mason jar with a tight lid will work too. Just shake it strongly for 15–20 seconds so all the flavors mix well.
Jigger or Measuring Tool
Good cocktails need accurate measurements, so a jigger is a great tool to have. If you don’t have one, use a 1 oz or 30 ml shot glass to measure the ingredients.
Strainer
A strainer helps keep small ice pieces out of the drink. A fine-mesh sieve works just as well, or you can use the lid of your jar if needed.
Glassware
A rocks glass is best for a classic look. But any short glass or even a mason jar can be fun. Just make sure it is big enough for the drink and lots of ice.
How to make the perfect Mudslide at home
Making a Mudslide is very easy. Follow these simple steps for a rich and creamy cocktail every time.
In a shaker, pour in the Kahlúa
Add 1 part (30 ml / 1 ounce) of Kahlúa. It is the main ingredient and gives the Mudslide its famous coffee flavor.
Add the Absolut Vodka
Pour in 1 part (30 ml / 1 ounce) of Absolut Vodka. We like Absolut because it is smooth and neutral. If you want to try something new, Absolut Vanilla adds extra flavor.
Add the Irish cream liqueur
Slowly pour in 1 part (30 ml / 1 ounce) of Irish cream liqueur. It adds sweetness and balances the coffee taste of Kahlúa. For a dairy-free option, use an almond milk-based Irish cream.
Fill the shaker with ice cubes
Use plenty of ice to chill the drink and slightly dilute it. Large ice cubes are better because they melt more slowly.
Shake hard for 15–20 seconds
Shake until the shaker feels cold on the outside. This means everything is well mixed and nicely chilled.
Strain the mixture into an ice-filled rocks glass
Use a strainer to pour the drink into a rocks glass with fresh ice. If you don’t have a strainer, use a fine-mesh sieve or something similar.
Serve and enjoy!
Our tips for making the Mudslide
Chill Your Glasses
Put your glasses in the freezer for about 15 minutes before making your Mudslide. This keeps the drink cold longer and gives it a nice frosty look. It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
Shake Vigorously
When mixing your Mudslide, shake with energy. Shake for at least 15–20 seconds so all the ingredients mix well and become cold. This also creates a light foam on top.
Cream it up
If you want your Mudslide even creamier, add a splash of heavy cream before shaking. You can also use light cream or milk.
Experiment with Garnishes
Garnishes make your Mudslide more special. We like chocolate shavings or a little cocoa powder for extra richness.
Try a Frozen Version
For warm days, try a Frozen Mudslide with ice cream. It’s perfect for summer. Don’t forget to add chocolate syrup for the full experience.
About the Mudslide
The Mudslide is a rich and creamy cocktail that tastes amazing. It mixes Kahlúa coffee liqueur, smooth Absolut Vodka, and soft Irish cream liqueur into a perfect blend for any occasion. Whether you are relaxing at home, serving an after-dinner dessert, or hosting guests, this Mudslide recipe always feels special and looks elegant.
Classic or Frozen?
When people think of Mudslides, they often imagine a frozen drink with chocolate syrup on top. It is very popular. But the classic Mudslide without ice cream is more refined and just as delicious. You can add chocolate flakes on top to make it even more luxurious.
A Brief History of the Mudslide
The Mudslide started in the 1970s at the Wreck Bar on Grand Cayman Island. It was first created as a version of the White Russian with Irish cream liqueur added. Over time, it became very popular because of its rich taste and flexibility. Today, it is loved both as a classic cocktail and as a frozen drink.

Leftover Kahlúa
Kahlúa is very versatile and can be used in many cocktails. Try it in an Espresso Martini or a White Russian. You can also use it in desserts like Kahlúa Coffee Fudge Brownies or add it to Tiramisu.
Leftover Absolut vodka
Absolut is used in many cocktails, so leftovers are never a problem. Try it in a Black Russian with Kahlúa or a simple Vodka Soda. You can also infuse it with fruits to make your own flavored vodka.
Leftover Irish Cream Liqueur
Add it to coffee or hot chocolate for a creamy taste. It is also great for shots like the B-52 with Kahlúa, Irish cream liqueur, and triple sec. In summer, try making White Russian Popsicles—just enjoy responsibly.
